“When I was making those (early) films, they were very, very few female directors, and there were certainly no women on set, which made taking one’s clothes off all the more difficult,” she observed.
All that has changed in recent years, Mirren continued, afterJulie Taymor directed her inThe Tempest, andHurt LockerhelmerKathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win an Oscar as best director.
“Things have moved on, but as far as I’m concerned, they haven’t moved on enough,” Mirren insisted, before telling Karlovy Vary fest present Jiri Bartoska, standing to the side after giving her the gong, that it was still a man’s world at the Czech Republic film festival.
If Dame Helen calls, you can be sure I’m going to answer.
Did you know?
Teenagers spend nearly 11 hours per day engulfed in media (internet, television, magazines, movies, etc.)
People learn more from media than from any other source of information nowadays.
Media is tailored to prey on your insecurities and make you feel as though you need to think, look, and act a certain way in order to be ‘accepted’.
“Girls get the message from very early on is that what’s most important is how they look. That their value, their worth, depends on that. And boys get the message that this is what’s important about girls. We get it from advertising, we get it from films, we get it from television shows…so no matter what else a woman does, no matter what her achievements, their value still depends on how they look.”
“The fact that media are so limiting and so derogatory towards the most powerful women in the country, then what does it say about media’s ability to take ANY woman seriously?”
Unplug yourself from the media. Learn to think independently. FIGHT BACK.
PLEASE take 8 minutes and watch this video. Reblog. Spread the word.
Amazing video. I’m so glad someone posted this. Every woman needs to watch this. I’ve seen Killing Us Softly by Jean Killbourne. I recommend it to any woman who is interested in the media and the portrayal of women in entertainment. Amazing and inspiring.

My name is Kelly Schomburg, I’m the girl with the red hair in these pictures. I was protesting at the Occupy Wall Street march yesterday when I and several other women were sprayed with mace and subsequently arrested. Many have already seen the video, which has been spreading like wildfire over twitter, Facebook, tumblr, and other video feeds, along with hundreds of other photos and videos. This is my recount of what happened.

And visiting old shoe boxes will cease now. Just don’t do it. Not until you’re 50.

I just really enjoy this photo.
